The capital and the largest city of Romania is located in the south-eastern part of the country at approximately 65 km north away from the Danube, on the banks of the Dambovita river. In the twenties, Bucharest was known as the little Paris.
Some of the most remarkable sights are the century-old buildings including the Justice Palace (1864), the Stirbei Palace (1835), the National Bank (1885), the Presidential Palace (former Cotroceni palace dating from the 17th century and subsequently improved). The outstanding religious buildings of Bucharest are Antim Monastery (1715) and Patriarchate Church (1665). Bucharest has many parks and forested areas including Herastrau, a huge park with lakes.
