Venice is the main city of the Veneto region, in the north-eastern part of Italy. In 1979, the whole city (with the entire lagoon) was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.
Venice is divided into six neighbourhoods: Dorsoduro, Santa Croce, San Polo, San Marco, Cannaregio and Castello, and comprises 118 islands, 354 bridges and 177 canals.
Saint Mark’s Square may be considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Here is where the Basilica of San Marco, the Doge’s Palace and the Basilica Campanile are located.
Other important Venetian monuments are: the Rialto Bridge, Arsenale, the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute and the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.
The main city canals are: Canal Grande and Canale della Giudecca. The first one divides the city in two and delineates an S, and the second one separates the old centre from the island of Giudecca.
