Sibiu Municipality represented one of the most important and blooming cities in Transylvania, being the centre of the German colonists settled in the area. It lately knew a significant economic and cultural revival, being today one of the cities with the largest level of foreign investment in Romania. In 2007 it was the European Cultural Capital, together with Luxembourg.
Sibiu and its neighborhoods are one of the most visited areas in Romania. The historical centre is one of the historical locations in the country which are the best preserved. In Sibiu there are many important museums including art, painting, decorative art collections, anthropology, history, archaeology, technology history and natural sciences.
The city is placed near the Fagaras Mountains – an important destination for mountain travels – and near Paltinis resort - a destination for winter sports.
